He went and picked up lunch for us and I made the baby's lunch and then after morning nap, we all ate and then we went to the zoo.
We're idiots who forgot about Bay to Breakers. It had been over, but still, it leaves behind a crowded city. So, first we sat in traffic for half an hour while the baby yelled about it, I petitioned my husband to look for alternate routes (I was driving) and he suggested perhaps we should go home. Then we arrived and we thought things were on the upswing.
And I thought the baby might like to wear her sunglasses and I was very wrong about that, but then she had a little snack (the breastfeeding kind) on a bench and things actually did start improving.
We stayed for two hours or so. The baby seemed to like the birds the best. Swans, ducks, the African aviary (the other aviary was closed), a scarlet ibis, and so forth. She also seemed pretty taken with the grizzly bears (cat! cat! cat!). The sleeping animals were of little interest to her, of course.
We ran out of time before we got to the children's zoo. Next time.
It wasn't such a grand success that we bought a family membership just yet, but I think we all had a nice time walking around outside for an afternoon.
And the baby fell asleep within ten minutes of us getting back into the car. We took the long way home, driving along the ocean. It was a very successful outing, particularly for an impulse trip and for how poorly it started.
